10 Black Movie Roles You Couldn’t Forget If You Tried

Since I’ve been so serious with my Black History Month blog entries over the past few weeks, let’s lighten the mood a little.

Let’s talk cinema!!!!

Some did it with their outfits. Some with classic phrases. Some with moments of unimaginable shock or hilarity. Whether lead or supporting roles, some Black characters have been stamped into the minds of pop culture in such a way that you can never forget them. Not even if you tried.

Here are 10 of them, in no particular order…
[Warning: some gifs may reveal spoilers]

Stephen (Samuel L. Jackson) in “Django Unchained” (2012)

Before Uncle Ruckus of “The Boondocks”, Stephen was the original “sell out n-word”. Loyal only to Candyland and ‘Massuh’ Calvin Candie, you might want to “mind your tongue” around him, for fear that your secrets be revealed.

‘Crying Tony’ (Arsenio Hall) in “Harlem Nights” (1989)

This dude… …(sigh) yeah…

Deebo (Tiny ‘Zeus’ Lister) in “Friday” (1995)

All I know is I ain’t sayin’ nothin’ when he asks, “WHAT bike?”

Clubber Lang (Mr. T) in “Rocky III”

His prediction? Pain. And he pities the fool. This is one brother you neeeeever wanna piss off in the street because he can back up everything he says. Hey, if he can steal the belt from Rocky Balboa and hit on his wife Adrian in broad daylight, you know he’s serious. Besides, he’ll crucify you… …real bad.

Sho’nuff (Julius Carry) in “The Last Dragon” (1985)

He was the meanest, the baddest mo-fo low-down in this town. And before Bruce Leroy found his “glow”, Sho’nuff had it first!

Julian ‘Big Brother Almighty’ Eaves (Giancarlo Esposito) in “School Daze” (1988)

Dean of Pledges for Gamma Phi Gamma Fraternity, Inc. This frat brother is so cool, his woman licked his (hair) part.

Ruby Rhod (Chris Tucker) in “The Fifth Element” (1997)

I’m too busy laughing at this guy to say anything about him. The first intergalactic radio personality with an entourage that would make RuPaul jealous. Bzzzzzzz!

Pop (Robin Harris) in “House Party” (1990)

This is a true, loving father. Any man that would walk around town late at night, roasting high school kids at a house party, cursing out policemen and looking to lay the belt to his son for sneaking out has got my respect. Especially since it happened to me too. The whoopin’, of course.

Biscuit (Miguel Nunez) in “Life” (1999)

He is the one who coined the phrase, “You were scurred, weren’t you. Don’t be scurred.” (Now you know) And let’s not forget that he’s the headliner at Ray’s (imaginary) Boom-Boom Club!

Morris (Morris Day) in Purple Rain (1984)

He is certified C-O-O-L and with one knowing glance, can have you slammed in a dumpster by his personal valet, driver and fellow bandmember Jerome. And oh yeah, he can squawk on stage while doing “The Bird” and still bring the house down.

And that’s it! I made an Honorable Mentions list, but I think I just might save them for a Part 2 to this one. Who knows…

Who do you think should be listed? Leave some characters (and their movies) in the comments section and we’ll see if they make it into a future post. 1. OMG You’re right! I originally had Brandi Web (A Thin Line Between Love And Hate) and Vera (Harlem Nights), before reducing my list to 10.

I’ll have to do it on the next one!

  2. Great list! I am enjoying Giancarlo Esposito as Adam Clayton Powell Jr in Godfather of Harlem as well. I have never seen Fifth Element. Your posts have me adding new stuff to my “watch list” and I hope to one day catch up! lol

  3. I’m glad you enjoyed it. Obviously, this list is not meant to be taken seriously.

Giancarlo is an excellent actor and extremely underrated. He needs more roles. Loved him in Godfather of Harlem.

    Thanks for reading!

  5. Great choices. As you can see, this list isn’t comprised of respectable characters. It’s all tongue-in-cheek. I’ll make a more dignified listicle next Black History Month. Thanks for reading!
