Make Someone Smile Today

Whether I’m on one of my two 15-minute breaks or at lunch, I always listen to music.  It’s no secret to anyone in my personal, professional, and social media families that I’m in love with music. Particularly old school.

The downside to listening during my workday is that it shortens my breaks. I mean, before I can truly get into my selections, it’s time to get back to work.

But today, today it helped me solve a minor problem: What to say to my group to close out the Friday.  This was the first time in a while that we had a two-day weekend, not including Memorial Day weekend.

Unlike most supervisors, who let their crews work until quitting time (sometimes saying goodnight), I usually interrupt my group with something silly to make them laugh, moments before closing out and preparing them for the upcoming Saturday.  Today, I was inspired to say something different, inspired by one of the songs that I heard during my second break: “Make Someone Smile Today” by L.T.D., Jeffrey Osborne’s former group.

“Yeah,” I thought.  “Make someone smile today.  But not just my people. Someone in their respective circles.  As many as possible.”

So today, 5 minutes before shift’s end, I interrupted their final moments with words similar to what I’d now like to say to you, my readers…

There is someone in your life who is struggling.  Struggling with depression, loneliness, heartbreak, hopelessness, confusion, despair.  Someone you’ve been promising you’d call or might have made a private commitment to reach out to at some point.  Someone you might not have thought about in some time.

Then there are those with whom you might have been at odds. Become estranged. Separated from because of a heated argument or a simple misunderstanding. Maybe just lost touch.

Then again, there are those who believe that all is fine with the world. Comfortable with the day-to-day operations of life. Those who might just need something different in the mix. Something strange, yet oh so familiar. Why can’t it be you?

It’s the weekend. Call 5 people. Call 3. Call 1. Tell them you were thinking about them. Tell them you miss them. Tell them how much you care. Talk for 30 minutes. Talk for 15. Talk for 5. Tell them you didn’t want or need anything. Ask them if THEY want or need anything.

Most likely, all they need is to hear your voice. Give them what they need, whether they know it or not.

You never know what it will do for them. My bet is, a whole lotta good.

Call them. I commission you. I challenge you. I beseech you. I dare you. I implore you.

Call them.

Make someone smile today. And if you’re not quite sure what to say, default to the great Stevie Wonder…

“I just called to say, I love you. And I mean it from the bottom of my heart…”

Love will take care of the rest.

  3. Hi Kenny,

Sorry for posting the same message twice but I didn’t think my first message went through. But I’m glad that it finally did. My sister and I just began a new project and were expecting to be done in 3 weeks. Hope you had a great Father’s Day!

Have a great weekend and keep in touch,
    Samara

  5. That’s one of my favorite songs too. There’s another one by Lionel Richie called Hello which is also a favorite. Lately from my daughter’s list I just fell in love with one song called “Strawberries and cigarettes “ , I don’t know the singer but it’s beautiful song and his voice is beautiful. Just reading the blog brought a smile 😊, Thank you Kenny.

  6. I had to think about what I wrote for a second when you said it was one of your favorite songs. I thought you were talking about “Make Someone Smile Today”, which was not internationally known. It’s more a popular old school tune for R&B fans who followed L.T.D.

I’m glad the article brought you another smile. That’s my goal, if not a laugh or a shock, then a smile will do.

And I got your other message. I still have to reply to that one. Thanks for reading, Jyotsna!

  7. I was talking about the song by Stevie Wonder 😊 I haven’t heard that song “make someone smile today “. In fact I have heard only a few , I think only the most popular ones which were heard all over the world in 80s and 90s. And mostly the ones my father used to hear. Brings back all the sweet memories.

  8. Yeah, I forgot to type that I figured out that it was Stevie. I know that unless it tops the billboards, you usually don’t hear it internationally. “Make Someone Smile Today” was not one of their greater hits, but it’s inspiring. Hopefully you had a chance to hear it.

In other news, the last project is finished (it was only 3 days long, comprised of SDs, ASDs and TLs. It was scheduled for two weeks but we got through it in record time. Now I’m finally free for awhile to focus on my writing and photography!

Hope you’re doing well! Say hello to everybody for me!
