A Father’s Day Message To Men Raising Sons

Although I have been recently blessed with the first “little woman” in our family (thanks to the gift of a granddaughter) I must say that I have never known the responsibility and joy of raising a daughter.

Princess Gianna

There is so much I’d like to say to that point, but where raising them to be proper young ladies is concerned, I am inexperienced (beyond what I witnessed as far as my father’s [and mother’s] interaction with my sisters).

I can, however, speak about the importance of being a father in a young man’s life (well, ALL of your children, but I’m focusing on the male product in this post).

So with respect to the beautiful daughter’s in the world, let me send this message regarding you men and your young lads (especially in the African American community)…

As “responsible” fathers, we are quickly becoming an endangered species. With each passing day, more and more so-called men live for the temporary pleasure of a woman’s touch, whereas fewer take on the responsibilities associated with the results of their actions – the conception and birth of a child.

Fortunately, there are many who, along with the mother, work together to raise that child, even if things don’t work out between them. I know it’s much tougher to do it individually, but they make it happen.

Unfortunately, there is still a staggering amount of “sperm donors” who consider their offspring “her problem” and hers alone.

Sad, but true.

And then there are those who feel it is their responsibility to travel the world, spreading their seed far and wide. I won’t say which celebrity(ies) come to mind.

Many of these males have been encouraged by their peers (some even taught by their own fathers) to “bed the woman, don’t wed the woman”…

Stupid, but true.

To those of you who have never abandoned your familial post in denial, fear or apathy, Happy Father’s Day, my brothers. Job well done.

But know this…

You are not being rewarded or applauded for doing what you should be doing, so don’t look for praise from me or anyone else for that matter.

This is your task from on high.

YOUR reward is the joy of being a part of your children’s lives and the satisfaction of knowing that when they are equipped to continue the journey on their own, you were responsible. Creating a new generation of providers, protectors, mentors, etc.

So stand up and continue to love. Continue to lead, guide, protect, educate, entertain, counsel, provide for and set the example…

…and pray that through our leadership, today’s male youth is inspired to step up and be who and what God called them to be:

Men first, then Fathers.

Enjoy the day and may our Father in Heaven continue to strengthen and sustain you.

Proverbs 22:6 (KJV) “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”

  2. Hey Jyotsna! How are you? Thank you for the Father’s Day greeting. The day was spent with family and of course, the little one.

About to begin a new project today, but I’m just a scorer this time around, so I can relax and let others steer the ship this time around. I think think this is the last project, so I’m looking forward to summer beginning shortly (this project us only 2 weeks long).

Glad you enjoyed the article and thanks for reading!
