Ok, let’s switch things up a bit here, this being National Cookie Day and all. I was thinking about sharing a cookie recipe for this post, but then I remembered, I don’t make cookies! Not that I can’t, but I think I’ve only done it once or twice in Home Economics class back in junior high. I do remember making brownies and my family loving them. That is, until I decided to double the recipe one day and used up more eggs than my parents expected.
This was back in the 70s, so trust me when I say that my steel mill lead pot working father wasn’t too crazy about me using too many eggs. Of course, he didn’t complain or apologize when the brownies were ready, and he had eaten more than his fair share.
Anyway, I don’t have much to say about cookies except that I love them. I really love them. I think we all do. They’re quick, convenient, small enough to smuggle in your pocket when going to school or taking a bunch out of an All-You-Can-Eat restaurant. Even when sneaking some from the kitchen. Why do you think so many children get in trouble after getting their hands caught in the literal cookie jar?
So here is a list of MY10 favorite cookie types to celebrate the day. And although there are some brands I love specifically when it comes to some of these varieties, this isn’t about promoting any company in particular. This is about the cookies themselves.
And this being Christmas season, you know Santa is eager to see my choices. Not that I’m saving any for him. It’s the season of giving, but I draw the line here.

Hey, that’s just the way the cookie crumbles (ba-dum-PUM!).
Let’s get to it, shall we? Grab your glass of milk and let’s talk about it…
My Top Ten Cookies (National Cookie Day)
And remember, this list is not by order of favorite, just randomly posted.
1. Peanut Butter Cookies

I know I JUST said this list is in no particular order, but I WILL put my all-time favorite first. This love began as a child when my older sister used to make them. And nothing was better than eating them when they were fresh and gooey, right out of the oven. What’s so funny about it is that I’m no real fan of peanut butter, but I go crazy over peanut butter products. That’s probably why my favorite store-brand cookies are anything peanut butter. Especially Nutter Butter (I know, I’m not supposed to be endorsing any brands, but this is my post, so hush!).
2. Raspberry Cookies

These aren’t the greatest cookies on the planet, but something about that raspberry in the middle makes the experience that much more enjoyable. I can remember getting these and eating around the filling, saving that gummy, gooey center for last.
3. Sandwich Cookies

Another cookie that doesn’t knock anyone’s socks off, but it’s the overall experience that keeps me coming back. I’ve always loved pulling them apart and eating each icing-topped side, although I was never one to actually lick the icing like they do in the commercials nor dip them in milk.
And I really enjoy the various types available: vanilla, chocolate, lemon and of course my favorite, peanut butter. Now that I have a granddaughter, I get to watch her take them from me, split them, lick the icing and finally, give me the bare cookies.
4. Sugar Cookies

Another big favorite, thanks to my big sister. She never baked cookies per our request, it was always on a whim. But when these babies were ready, with that nice crystalized sugary surface, we were in for a fun time. She made these in abundance, like she did the peanut butter cookies, so there was never any fighting over them.
5. Oatmeal Raisin Cookies

Next to peanut butter cookies, I buy these the most whenever I’m at a store, bakery or cookie shop. So obviously, they’d be #2, if I was ranking them. A soft chew that goes well warm or cold with great flavor, texture and an awesome aftertaste. I also like the iced oatmeal, even the cheap hard ones from the supermarket.
6. White Chocolate Macadamia Cookies

Ok, these are insane! I’ve got to put these at #3. But depending on where you get them, some of the higher-level versions make you want to put them in your pocket and run right out of the store when you don’t have enough money. Thankfully it didn’t come to that when the store had them on display as samples. Problem was, they were left unattended. Guess where my youngest and I hung out for several minutes?
7. Red Velvet Cookies

I’ve only had these once, when a co-worker brought them to work. By the time I visited that location again, she had left the company for a career change. I’m still kicking myself for not asking for a recipe, being a red velvet cake fan. I’ve got to try making them myself.
8. Snickerdoodle Cookies

I know that this one is more popular during the holiday season, but I’d eat it any time of year. It’s a drop cookie with the final finish and taste of a sugar cookie with cinnamon, but it’s a different enough taste to be considered a totally different cookie with me. And definitely a fav.
9. Brownie Cookies

Another cookie I had never thought of until I actually had one. Perfect density, tasting just like brownies. You’d wonder why they even need to be made, if they taste so much like them. Trust me, they’re worth it. Chocolatey Goodness on a plate!
10. Butter Cookies

Last on the list, one of my childhood favorites and once again, I need to name the brand we all know. Those doggone Salerno Butter Cookies with the hole in the middle. I’m willing to wager that every child that’s ever eaten more than one took the time to place them on their fingers like rings. Then tried to eat their way around the cookies without them braking and falling off. These were thin and went down fast, and like potato chips, you could never eat just one.
And that’s it! But wait? I didn’t name the world-classic Chocolate Chip cookies!!! Brace yourself… They are not among my favorites! I’ll admit, when my wife bakes them, I’m first in line. But that’s because she hadn’t made any others during that time. That’s a lack of options. But seriously, no disrespect, they’re just not at the top. Doesn’t mean I won’t devour a bag of Chewy Chips Ahoy cookies all by myself.
In the end, it doesn’t matter. They’re cookies and no matter what the brand or type, I’m greatly exceeding my caloric intake for the day!

HAPPY NATIONAL COOKIE DAY!
