For some of my readers who have been hanging around for awhile, you might remember the article I wrote about the television show and Cosby Show spin-off, A Different World (“ADW: A Sitcom Come Too Early, Too Late And Just In Time”). It began with the college adventures of Cosby daughter Denise Huxtable and expanded into a six-season hit that covered just about every world-issue applicable to college students, particularly African Americans. I’ve also shared my 10 Favorite Moments from the show.
If you read the first article, you might remember that I closed it out by applauding the “on again – off again.” yet beautiful and inspiring relationship between central characters Dwayne Wayne & Whitley Gilbert.
Well, it’s been more than six years since I wrote that piece, and now the show has been rebooted with a new generation of Hillman hopefuls, including Dwayne and Whitley’s daughter, Deborah.
After multiple discussions with my son about why he should watch, he and I sat through the entire series, which he loved. However, while watching, I’ve come to a new conclusion:
Whitley’s character was garbage!
Yeah, I said it.
Now, I know some of you will say I’m contradicting the love affair that I so highly praised, while more of you might come to Whitley’s defense (in many cases, simply because you “ladies stick together”). And I’m cool with that. But I would be remiss if I let my review of the characters lead you to believe that she was the fairytale princess she presented herself to be.
Before I begin (which seemingly, I already have), let me say that I didn’t hate her character at all. She was a hilariously fun replacement as the frontrunner after Cosby daughter Denise Huxtable left the show at the end of season 1. Still, she in no way was a victim OR a saint.
That being said, let me share:
A Different World (1987): 10 Reasons Why Whitley Was Wildly Wicked…
(Fact check me for accuracy if you must. I did—and unfortunately for Whitley, the evidence is still there.)
A quick note before we get started: I actually wrote the original version of this post about five years ago. Somehow, it got buried in my drafts, where it apparently decided to take up permanent residence. My apologies for forgetting all about it. But with the new series bringing A Different World back to mind, I remembered this little gem was sitting there unfinished. So, five years late—but right on time—here it is.
And note: This is based on the original series which ran from 1987-1993. Not spoilers have been added from the 2026 series.
1. She treated Millicent like dirt.
Season 1, Episode 19 — “Clair’s Last Stand”
Anyone remember her Right Hand (Wo)Man “Millie” from Season 1? The cute girl who became Ron Johnson’s adorable and innocent girlfriend? Whitley never treated her as an equal and never hesitated to put Millie to work for her own selfish gain. She treated her almost like an obedient underling—similar to the relationship between Peppermint Patty and Marcie from Peanuts, with Marcie always calling Patty “sir.”
For example, Millie tells Whitley that she can’t spend her birthday with her because it’s Millie and Ron’s three-month dating anniversary. Despite the fact that it’s a ruse allowing everyone to hold a surprise party for Whitley, Whitley’s attitude is selfish and mean, particularly when she attempts to guilt Millie into spending time with her instead of her man. Granted, her birthday only comes once a year, but the way she treated Millie was just wrong.
You know what? Come to think of it, Whitley had not one, not two, but THREE birthdays featured throughout the course of this series.
And yes, years later, Dwayne had to set her straight when he discovered that she had basically taken over Kimberly Reese’s planning of her own “surprise” birthday party.

2. She completely third-wheeled Dwayne’s one and only date with Denise.
Season 1, Episode 20 — “If Only For One Night”
Dwayne finally convinces Denise to go out with him, only to have their evening invaded by a despondent Whitley, who is upset about failing to land a summer internship and facing the prospect of returning home to her mother.
Now, I’ll give Whitley this much: she was genuinely upset, and the episode ultimately gives us one of the first real glimpses of the friendship developing between the three of them.
But still…
Girl, they were on a DATE!
Whitley knew damn well how Dwayne felt about Denise, yet somehow their romantic evening became group therapy.
3. Whitley wanted everyone to want her and only her.
Season 3, Episode 17 — “That’s The Trouble With You All”
Whitley had several “could it be us?” moments with Dwayne, but wouldn’t allow a relationship to develop, claiming they were just friends. She constantly threw her relationship with Julian in his face and then decided to play matchmaker by setting Dwayne up with another woman.
Which, by the way, I find insulting and hurtful. It’s basically saying, “You can’t have me, but here—I found somebody else for you.”
No one wants to hear that.
But here’s the kicker: Whitley gets jealous when the date actually WORKS! She and Julian happen to run into Dwayne and his date, Megan, and Whitley proceeds to interfere with the very date SHE ARRANGED. Even Julian notices her jealousy.
Wait a minute.
You don’t want Dwayne.
You found him another woman.
Now you’re mad because he likes her?
Woman, make up your mind!
4. She ghosted Dwayne.
Season 4, Episode 1 — “Everything Must Change”
During Dwayne’s internship in Japan, he sends several letters to Whitley that go unanswered. Feeling jilted, he eventually gives up and begins a relationship with Kinu, whom he meets that summer.
When Whitley returns to Hillman ready to finally pursue a relationship with Dwayne, she is stunned to discover that he has moved on. Dwayne points out that after writing her repeatedly and receiving nothing in return, he assumed he had gotten her message.
Or, more accurately…
…her lack of one.
So after keeping this man waiting for years, Whitley finally decides she’s ready—and apparently expects Dwayne to have remained sitting on a shelf until she came back to claim him.
Nope.
5. She openly and blatantly disrespected Kinu.
Season 4, Episodes 5 & 7 — “The Goodwill Games” / “Good Help is Hard To Fire”
From Whitley’s constant mispronunciation of Kinu’s name, to making disparaging remarks about her, to openly pursuing Dwayne while knowing he was in a relationship, Whitley made it quite evident that she had little respect for Kinu’s place in his life.
After Whitley and Dwayne share a kiss while preparing for an academic competition, Dwayne makes it clear that although Whitley is a temptation, he intends to respect his relationship with Kinu. Whitley’s response?
Essentially: That’s YOUR problem.
She later declares that Kinu may have won the competition, but she intends to get the man.
And then Whitley actually gets herself hired to clean Dwayne and Kinu’s apartment—with an ulterior motive. The inevitable confrontation helps bring Dwayne’s unresolved feelings for Whitley into the open and contributes to the end of his relationship with Kinu.
I don’t care if you rooted for Whitley or not, Kinu’s final words to Dwayne—telling him that he didn’t have to fire her because she quit—were painful to watch.
Kinu didn’t deserve that at all.
6. She heartlessly used Ron Johnson.
Season 4, Episode 2 — “How Bittersweet It Is”
Whitley accepts a date with Dwayne’s roommate, Ron, for the sole purpose of making Dwayne jealous. She even leaves voicemail messages making sure Dwayne knows exactly when and where the date is taking place (young’uns, this was the answering-machine era—everybody in the room could hear your messages!). Eventually her conscience catches up with her and she admits the truth to Ron.
Ron, of course, knows exactly what’s happening and goes along with it anyway.
And after initially giving him a harmless kiss on the cheek, Whitley sees Dwayne and pulls Ron into a much more passionate kiss—because apparently merely using the man wasn’t getting the job done fast enough.
Ron knew he was being played and still signed up for the game.
Brother…
…have some dignity.
7. She went out with Julian “one last time”—and immediately started wondering what she gave up.
Season 4, Episode 13 — Ex-Communication
Now, I’m going to be fair to Whitley on this one.
Julian calls and asks her to dinner. Whitley is already involved with Dwayne, but Dwayne knows about the dinner and actually encourages her to go. So simply meeting an old boyfriend isn’t the problem here.
What happens afterward is.
Whitley learns that Julian is engaged to Shelby Walters—a beautiful former runway model and translator—and that the two are planning to move to Paris. Suddenly, Whitley starts obsessing over the luxurious life she believes she might have had with Julian.
And Dwayne is left wondering whether anything he can offer will ever be enough for her.
THAT’S my problem.
It’s one thing to wonder “what if?” about an old relationship. We’re human.
But when you’re in love with somebody else and start mourning the lifestyle you could’ve had with your ex?
Yeah…
We’re gonna need to talk.
8. She ended her engagement to Dwayne over his date with another woman.
Season 5, Episodes 9 & 10 — “To Tell The Truth” / “Do You Take This Woman?”
Okay, Dwayne doesn’t get a free pass here.
During the stress of their engagement, Dwayne repeatedly tries to talk with Whitley about his doubts and concerns. After another argument, he meets an attractive science professor named Lisa Westin and later goes to dinner with her against Ron’s advice. Kim spots the two together—and yes, there is some hand-holding involved.
So no, Dwayne wasn’t exactly sitting across the table discussing the weather.
To his credit, he eventually tells Whitley himself.
Whitley is devastated, and when Dwayne cannot assure her that he has no doubts about marrying her, she calls off their engagement.
Now, I know some of you are split on whether either of them was right in this situation.
And that’s fair.
But remember this point.
Because we’re coming back to it…
9. She slept with Dwayne while in a relationship.
Season 5, Episodes 18 & 19 — “Kiss You Back” / “Conflict Of Interest”
See?
Told you we’d be back.
By this point, Whitley and Byron are becoming serious, but she is still clearly carrying unresolved feelings for Dwayne. She invites Dwayne over to clear the air between them, and instead of achieving closure…
…they sleep together.
Dwayne is just as responsible. I’m not letting him off the hook.
But remember Point #8: Whitley ended her engagement to Dwayne after he went to dinner with another woman and admitted being attracted to her.
Now Whitley is involved with Byron and actually sleeps with her ex.
And when Byron comes knocking the next morning, she has Dwayne hide.
Come on, Whitley!
Byron eventually learns the truth, Whitley admits what happened and insists that she no longer loves Dwayne. Surprisingly, Byron forgives her and chooses to continue their relationship.
That man was either deeply in love or had the patience of Job.
Maybe both.
10. She jilted Byron at the alter.
Season 5, Episodes 24 & 25 — “Save The Best For Last, Parts 1 & 2”
Now, I’m one of the millions of people who never wanted Whitley with Byron. I was praying for reconciliation between her and Dwayne.
Furthermore, I screamed like a girl with everybody else when Dwayne finally showed up at the wedding and became the one to “speak now” instead of “forever holding his peace.”
It remains one of the most iconic moments in television history.
But let’s look at this from Byron’s side for a moment.
The night before the wedding, Dwayne shows up and has one last emotional conversation with Whitley. The next day, Whitley walks down that aisle still conflicted. When it comes time to take her vows, she freezes. Then Dwayne finally jumps up, comes down the aisle and asks Whitley to marry him instead.
And she does.
Seconds later, Byron is standing there watching his fiancée run into another man’s arms.
DAYUM.
Woman, it took you all of 20 seconds to leave old boy standing there like the kid never picked for either dodgeball team.
If you were THAT quick to drop him, you should’ve broken that engagement long before making it a public spectacle!
And that’s it.
10 reasons why Whitley was wildly wicked.
As I said at the beginning, I loved the evolution of her relationship with Dwayne. It was the stuff of romantic legend. But as an individual?
That woman could be a piece of work.
And if you’re still not convinced, I haven’t even emptied the evidence locker.
She abused her position as Dean of Pledges for Alpha Delta Rho, becoming particularly hard on her own roommate Kimberly Reese until Kim led the other pledges in a revolt against her. Season 4, Episode 21 — “Sister To Sister, Sister.”
She opposed bringing Heavy D & The Boyz to Hillman for a benefit concert, openly dismissing rap music—and unknowingly vented about it directly to Heavy D himself. Season 3, Episode 6 — “Delusions Of Daddyhood.”
She was so demanding about her 21st birthday that she became angry with Julian for forgetting it…despite never actually telling him when her birthday was. Season 3, Episode 20 — “21 Candles.”
And years later, married to Dwayne, she basically tried to help plan her own surprise birthday party until Dwayne caught her meddling and decided to teach her a lesson. Season 6, Episode 15 — “Happy Birthday To Moi.”
She insulted Mr. Gaines and dismissed his offer to cater Lena Horne’s visit to Hillman, only for Ms. Horne herself to prefer the kind of home-cooked food Mr. Gaines had been offering in the first place. Season 6, Episode 24 — “A Rock, A River, A Lena.”
And she certainly wasn’t happy about her father’s remarriage, fearing that his new wife and family would replace her in his life. Season 3, Episode 5 — “Forever Hold Your Peace.”
I could go on and on, but I’m sure you get the point.
I’m going to pass on watching the original series again—at least for now—because it’s time to check out the new A Different World, now available on Netflix.
And as I mentioned before, the new series revolves around Dwayne and Whitley’s daughter attending Hillman.
